    Speech and Debate Team Organization

Reitz Speech and Debate team will be available this year

    • in 3 pathways: as a club, as intramural competition, and as a team on the National Speech and Debate Association.  We want everyone to have confidence in public speaking.
    • for meetings on Wednesday and Friday after school from 2:40 PM to 3:30 PM.  All NSDA Team members should attend at least one practice per week.
    • to reach out to Middle School students and support their efforts on the speech team.
    • to record any and all speeches and appearances outside of class to build your National points in competition for scholarships.

    Club:
For students who need a limited time or more casual committment.  Students who are more introverted or less out-going are highly encouraged to try this option.  You know this is a skill you need to work on, but want to go at a slower pace. You will be given both interpretive and impromptu items to practice in a setting with fewer observers.

In addition, this is a great place for students who are developing competitive projects, such as UE Changemaker Challenge, National History Day, USI Science Fair, and We the People.  You are welcome to practice with us!  Space and advice will be available.

    Intramural Competition:
For students who would like to try speech before committing to competition with other schools.  This is a great option for students who are not sure if they can fit the speech team into their busy schedules.

    NSDA Team:
Speech meets are held Saturday mornings and begin in November.  There are a wide variety of event categories.  Your first decision will be in which category you wish to compete.  Here is a link to guide you through the National Events.   Here is a link for the state-wide events.  You are expected to attend at least one practice per week.

What will we do at Practice?
    The Usual Agenda:
    Meet in Room 206
    2:40 PM  Announcements
    2:45 PM  Break-Out Practice Sessions:
Club Discussion - in Room 206
Interpretive event practice - in Stairwell A (near Bowl)
Argumentation event practice -- in hallway
Public Address events -- in Stairwell B (near front parking)
